Strong cold-season gusts brought walls down upon fragile shelters housing Palestinians uprooted by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 people. This tragedy highlights the dangerous situation that continue after over 24 months of devastating bombardment and severe shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides No Respite from Severe Elements

While a truce has been active from October, aid groups state that residents broadly lack the sufficient housing necessary to withstand recurring cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which took in the victims, said on this week that the deceased were a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy died of hypothermia overnight.

"International actors has allowed us to witness death in all its forms," said a family member after the burial. "While it is correct the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse

As per the medical center, 3 members of a single household — elderly a man, his teenage relative, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an eight-metre high wall collapsed on top of their tent in a coastal area of the city. No fewer than 5 others were injured in the event.

Their relatives on that day began removing the rubble that had buried their family and reconstructing the temporary homes for those who remained.

Humanitarian Distribution and Continuing Crisis

The UN and its aid organization allies were distributing tents, tarps, blankets and clothes as well as nutrition and sanitation items throughout Gaza, said the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of the population live in makeshift tents because their houses were turned into rubble over the course of the war. Humanitarian organizations say an insufficient amount of building supplies are reaching Gaza during the ceasefire.

Casualty Numbers Since the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the administration, reports more than four hundred and forty people have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies taken to hospitals after the truce went into effect. The authority maintains comprehensive fatality records that are considered generally reliable by UN agencies and independent experts.

James Elder, representing the UN children’s agency Unicef, stated on that day that at least one hundred children under the age of 18 – 60 males and forty girls – had been killed since the truce started due to armed actions, such as drone strikes, air raids, artillery fire and employment of bullets. Those figures, he said, reflected cases where sufficient details had been gathered to warrant recording, but the total toll is believed to be higher. He added that hundreds of children had been wounded.

"Although 'bombings and shootings have slowed' under the truce, they have not ceased," the spokesperson informed reporters at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "Therefore what the international community now calls quiet would be viewed as a crisis anywhere else," he said.

Third Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of over 2 million individuals has been struggling to fend off the cold weather and bad weather away while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a absence of more substantial transitional shelter, which is badly needed during the colder season.
