Contaminated Seafood Issue: The Nation Confronts Pollution in Major Manufacturing Zone
An extensive manufacturing complex located in the suburbs of Jakarta is addressing radioactive pollution after a government taskforce detected traces of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at 22 production plants inside the area, that includes companies that export frozen marine products.
Urgent Response and Goods Withdrawal
The finding has led to immediate cleanup efforts and the moving of nearby residents, coming after a comparable pollution alert in the US that was linked to the Jakarta plants.
An important multinational store chain is one of the companies that have recalled products from its stores following the discovery.
Probe and Detection of Pollution
The country's authorities launched an inquiry after the American FDA identified Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a consignment of frozen coated shrimp exported by a local company.
The FDA issued an warning advising suppliers and sellers to dispose of the product and not sell it, even though the found amount was well under the agency's intervention threshold. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had found would not present an acute hazard to the public.
The FDA explained: “The primary health effect of concern following extended, ongoing small amount exposure (for example through eating of polluted food or water over a period) is an elevated chance of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within body cells.”
Widespread Contamination and Health Examinations
Radiation scans showed at least twenty-two plants in the industrial zone were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not name the 21 additional manufacturing facilities, but said they would promptly undergo cleanup procedures conducted by the country's nuclear authority.
The environment minister stated that people living in strongly contaminated zones would be moved until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the well-being of the residents was the “main concern”.
Medical officials also conducted checks on local employees and residents located near the manufacturing estate, finding nine people who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a medical facility before being allowed to return home.
Cleanup and Containment Plans
The affected sites will right away undergo decontamination procedures by the national nuclear agency. Authorities have also selected the site of a scrap metal plant as an isolation center for contaminated materials.
The country, which has no atomic power plants or weapons program, believes that Caesium-137 may have entered the country from overseas.
Source of Pollution and Trade Limits
A taskforce representative told the media that recycled metal shipments were the probable source of contamination and announced the authorities would promptly impose limits on metal waste imports. He said that transport were also being inspected for potential contamination as they traveled through the region.
About Caesium-137 and Health Risks
Caesium-137 is a hazardous radioactive isotope that typically enters the ecosystem as a result of nuclear experiments or incidents, like Fukushima or Chernobyl. Trace quantities are found in soil, products and air.
The amount detected in the chilled prawns was far lower than regulatory action limits, but the authority stated long-term exposure to including low doses of the element was associated to an higher chance of the disease.
Withdrawal Information
The recalled shrimp was available at major store locations across at least a dozen US states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
