Chicago White Sox Sign Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Multi-Million Dollar Deal.

In a significant move for their retooling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract bringing in the accomplished player.

Financial Terms and Incentives

The agreement includes a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to salaries of $16 million for the next season and $17 million for the following year.

Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on award achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • Half a million dollars for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • $250K for finishing in the top ten.
  • $250,000 for winning the ROY honor.

The contract includes that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his approval and makes him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the contract. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club are also entitled to a supplemental fee of 15% triggered incentive payments.

Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever Japanese to represent the South Siders, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 in February, enters a emerging lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a last-place season, placing last in the division but showing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.

Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a record-breaking 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, breaking the single-season record for a Japanese-born player previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Even with striking out 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. He started playing mainly at first, he has more recently played to third base.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a game-ending double that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The next night in the final against the USA, he blasted a tying shot in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.

The power hitter is slated to be unveiled at a media availability on Monday.
