Arteta Hails a More Dependable Team and Reveals Havertz Setback.
Mikel Arteta remains confident that his squad can continue to cope with player absences after revealing that forward Kai Havertz will not return for the coming weeks.
Extended Absence for Havertz
The Germany international has been out since the summer due to an operation on his knee. Initially expected to return earlier in December, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when stepping up his training and could not progress “to the next level.”
“Our experience helped us build a team that is much more reliable and has increased versatility,” commented Arteta.
Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash
This news leaves a tactical puzzle for the midweek match against Brentford. A decision is required between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who found the net as a makeshift striker against Chelsea, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who came back off the bench as a substitute. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also in contention after 11 months out.
Fitness Doubts Remain
More doubts surround defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Stamford Bridge game. As a result, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably start again in central defence for the Premier League front-runners.
The manager is convinced the substantial investment on reinforcements during the summer has resulted in a more robust situation to handle such unavailability.
Greater Options Key to Premier League Pursuit
When asked if a larger pool of players was benefiting their title quest, Arteta was emphatic. “Yes, because this season has been worse in certain positions, and now the situation with the defence,” he noted.
“Our previous experiences taught us that we have to use players in different positions, and they have to be able to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at the top. And the example of Mikel Merino.”
Manager’s Sympathy for Frustrated Havertz
Commenting on the complication highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided further detail. “His recovery was progressing. He could not go to the subsequent stage and now it appears like we have solved that issue.”
He shared his personal desire to see him return. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, Havertz is someone that, personally, I love so much for the qualities he offers to the team, but his personality, his personality. I watch him struggle being outside.”
“His playing record is outstanding, he's rarely been injured, and I am eagerly awaiting to see him return around the team playing because I think it’s going to be a massive boost.”
