Arne Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains Liverpool's Support After PSV Defeat
Arne Slot conceded that it was expected for concerns to be raised about his future after a further heavy loss versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their 9th loss in twelve matches, representing the club's poorest run after being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Dutch league title holders on a punishing evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I've received a lot of support from management,” the coach commented.
“It would be nice to turn it around and earn three points of course but if you are in a managerial role and not doing well then it's expected that people question you.”
He added, “I am OK with my position. It is not the initial instance I've found myself in a tough spot but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Talks with The Board
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach said:
“There's regular dialogue. They are supportive to the team and to me and those talks happen but they aren't calling me all the time of the day to say they trust me.”
He added, “In the normal discussions I feel the confidence. However I've not talked to them after this defeat so far so let’s see.”
Recurring Failings and Squad Reaction
The manager lamented recurring failings from his squad in their Champions League defeat, namely wasted chances and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his view of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I do not. I’m saying that to everybody,” Jones remarked.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don't have to wait to think about it. I'm beyond getting mad inside. I've reached the stage now where I simply lack the phrases.”
He continued, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the team I support. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen Liverpool all my life.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team enduring a phase like this with performances like these.”
He concluded, “But we still have the emblem on our shirts. And until that badge is taken away, we'll continue to battle.”
“We’re going to try to help the side back to the top, show everyone again what Liverpool stands for and the reason it's called the greatest side in the planet.”
“However currently, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
