A Story of Surprising Kindness: When a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Ground

Back in 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. I figured I would book lodging after getting there, yet when I arrived, a big convention was in town and all the budget hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.

As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could bed down in the airport – only to discover the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open all night. Unsure of what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on a city-bound bus and found myself drifting towards the casino, reasoning I might spend those hours in an establishment that was open through the night. This was not ideal in the best shape for nailing the admissions interview the next morning, yet, as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.

We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.

I must have looked confused since a young woman spotted me walking aimlessly through downtown and inquired whether I needed help. I shared my situation and immediately she offered I was welcome to sleep on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – which was perfect, given that my the important interview was the following day. She went further by offering a meal: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her part-time job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and safe to sleep.

In retrospect, I now understand the significant risk she took being a woman allowing a male stranger who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I existed within my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she offered that help – yet very grateful.

I didn’t end up attending ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of generosity. I hope the universe has returned her good deed abundantly. The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.
